Opening sentence

M: For by grace you have been saved through faith,

C: and this is not your own doing;

M: it is the gift of God – not the result of works,

C: so that no one may boast.         (Eph 2:8,9 NRSV)

PREPARATION

M:  In the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

C:   Amen

CONFESSION AND ABSOLUTION

M: Friends in Christ:

Let us confess our sins to God our Father and ask him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to forgive us.

C: We confess that we are born in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves.

We have sinned against you in  thought, word, and deed,

by what we have done

and by what we have failed to do.

We have not loved you with our whole heart,

and we have not loved our neighbour as ourselves.

We deserve your eternal punishment.
For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us.

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us,

so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways,

to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

M: As a called and ordained servant of the word, I announce the grace of God to all of you. On behalf of my Lord Jesus Christ,  and by his command, I forgive the sins of all of you who repent and believe,

in the name of the Father and of the Son † and of the Holy Spirit.

Peace be with you.

Amen.

Baptised into Thy name most holy

LH 277                                            CAL 293

Ich bin getauft auf deinen Namen

Johann Jakob Rambach 1693-1735

tr Catherine Winkworth 1827-78, alt

1. Baptised into your name most holy,

O Father, Son, and Spirit, Lord,

I claim a place, though weak and lowly,

among the people you have called.

With Christ I’m buried, dead to sin,

and now your Spirit lives within.

2. My loving Father, here you take me

to be your own dear child and heir;

my faithful Saviour, here you let me

the fruit of all your sorrows share;

come, Holy Spirit, comfort me

when threatening clouds around I see.

3. My faithful God, you will protect me.

Your covenant surely will abide;

do not be angry and reject me

if I should break it on my side.

Have mercy when I come defiled;

forgive, lift up, restore your child.

4. All that I am and love most dearly,

receive it all, O Lord, from me.

Help me to make my vows sincerely

and your devoted child to be.

Let nothing that I am or own

serve any will but yours alone.

Holy baptism  (Trinity)

SCRIPTURAL COMMAND

M: Our Lord Jesus Christ says: All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.

And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

 ADDRESS

M: The word of God teaches that we are born sinful and unclean, but God washes us clean in the waters of baptism, and we are born again as his children. Through baptism our heavenly Father forgives us our sins and unites us with our Lord Jesus Christ, so that we share in his death and resurrection. And the Holy Spirit renews us and gives us eternal life.

1st Reading

Numbers 21:4-9   The snake of bronze in the desert    CEV

R: The first Reading for the Fourth Sunday in Lent is written in Chapter 21 of Numbers, beginning at Verse 4

4The Israelites had to go around the territory of Edom, so when they left Mount Hor, they headed south toward the Red Sea. But along the way, the people became so impatient 5that they complained against God and said to Moses, “Did you bring us out of Egypt, just to let us die in the desert? There’s no water out here, and we can’t stand this awful food!”

6Then the LORD sent poisonous snakes that bit and killed many of them.

7Some of the people went to Moses and admitted, “It was wrong of us to insult you and the LORD. Now please ask him to make these snakes go away.”

Moses prayed, 8and the LORD answered, “Make a snake out of bronze and place it on top of a pole. Anyone who gets bitten can look at the snake and won’t die.”

9Moses obeyed the LORD. And all of those who looked at the bronze snake lived, even though they had been bitten by the poisonous snakes.

This is the Word of the Lord

C:  Thanks be to God

Psalm   Psalm 107:1-3,17-22  CEV

R:The Psalm is PSALM  107

1Shout praises to the LORD! He is good to us, and his love never fails.

C: 2Everyone the LORD has rescued from trouble should praise him,

R:3everyone he has brought from the east and the west, the north and the south.

C: 17Some of you had foolishly committed a lot of sins and were in terrible pain.

R:18The very thought of food was disgusting to you, and you were almost dead.
C: 19You were in serious trouble, but you prayed to the LORD, and he rescued you.

R:20By the power of his own word, he healed you and saved you from destruction.
C: 21You should praise the LORD for his love and for the wonderful things he does for all of us.

R:  22You should celebrate by offering sacrifices and singing joyful songs to tell what he has done.
C:   Glory to the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit;

As it was in the beginning is now, and will be for ever. Amen

2nd Reading

Ephesians 2:1-10   CEV      Saved by grace through faith

The Second Reading is written in Chapter 2 of Ephesians, beginning at Verse 1.

In the past you were dead because you sinned and fought against God.

2You followed the ways of this world and obeyed the devil. He rules the world, and his spirit has power over everyone who doesn’t obey God.

3Once we were also ruled by the selfish desires of our bodies and minds. We had made God angry, and we were going to be punished like everyone else.

4-5But God was merciful! We were dead because of our sins, but God loved us so much that he made us alive with Christ, and God’s wonderful kindness is what saves you. 6God raised us from death to life with Christ Jesus, and he has given us a place beside Christ in heaven.

7God did this so that in the future world he could show how truly good and kind he is to us because of what Christ Jesus has done.

8You were saved by faith in God, who treats us much better than we deserve. This is God’s gift to you, and not anything you have done on your own. 9It isn’t something you have earned, so there is nothing you can brag about.

10God planned for us to do good things and to live as he has always wanted us to live. That’s why he sent Christ to make us what we are.

This is the Word of the Lord

C:  Thanks be to God

Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?
Oh! Sometimes it causes me to tremble, tremble, tremble.
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?

           Were you there when the sun refused to shine?

GOSPEL

John 3:14-21      CEV      Jesus brings life and light to the world

M:  The Holy Gospel is written in chapter 3 of the Gospel according to St John beginning at verse 14.

C:Glory to you O Lord

14And the Son of Man must be lifted up, just as that metal snake was lifted up by Moses in the desert. 15Then everyone who has faith in the Son of Man will have eternal life.

16God loved the people of this world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who has faith in him will have eternal life and never really die. 17God did not send his Son into the world to condemn its people. He sent him to save them! 18No one who has faith in God’s Son will be condemned. But everyone who doesn’t have faith in him has already been condemned for not having faith in God’s only Son.

19The light has come into the world, and people who do evil things are judged guilty because they love the dark more than the light. 20People who do evil hate the light and won’t come to the light, because it clearly shows what they have done. 21But everyone who lives by the truth will come to the light, because they want others to know that God is really the one doing what they do.

This is the Gospel of the Lord

C:  Praise to You O Christ.

M: Thank you, Lord Jesus, for dying on the cross so that we might live.
Help us to believe in you and live in your light.
C: Amen.

We sing the praise of Him who died, v.1-3

LHS 75    CAL 293

Thomas Kelly (1769-1855)

1.  We sing the praise of Him who died,

Of Him who died upon the cross;

The sinner’s hope let men deride,

For this we count the world but loss.

2.  Inscribed upon the cross we see,

In shining letters, ‘God is love’;

He bears our sins upon the tree;

He brings us mercy from above.

3.  The cross! it takes our guilt away;

It holds the fainting spirit up;

It cheers with hope the gloomy day,

And sweetens every bitter cup.

SERMON

Rock of ages cleft for me

LH330      CAL 293

Augustus Montague Toplady (1740-1778), alt.

1. Rock of ages cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in You;

Let the water and the blood,

From Your ruptured side which flowed,

Be of sin the double cure:

Cleanse me from its guilt and power.

2. Not the labours of my hands

Can fulfil Your law’s demands;

Could my zeal no respite know,

Could my tears for ever flow,

All for sin could not atone:

You must save, and You alone.

3. Nothing in my hand I bring,

Simply to Your cross I cling;

Naked, come to You for dress;

Helpless, look to You for grace;

Foul, I to the fountain fly;

Wash me, Saviour, or I die.

4 While I draw this fleeting breath,

When my eyelids close in death,

When I soar to worlds unknown,

See You on Your judgement throne:

Rock of ages, cleft for me,

Let me hide myself in You.

To God be the glory

LHS 793        CAL293

Frances Jane van Alstyne 1820-1915

1. To God be the glory, great things he has done!

So loved he the world that the gave us his Son,

who yielded his life an atonement for sin,

and opened the life-gate that all may go in!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord!

Let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father, through Jesus the Son,

and give him the glory, great things he has done!

2. O perfect redemption, the purchase of blood,

to every believer the promise of God!

And every offender who truly believes,

that moment from Jesus a pardon receives:

Praise the Lord! ….

3. Great things he has taught us, great things he has done,

and great our rejoicing through Jesus the Son;

but purer, and higher, and greater will be

our wonder, our rapture, when Jesus we see:

Praise the Lord! ….
