MAUNDY THURSDAY NOTES ON THE READINGS

EXODUS 12:1-14: The Passover was an annual festival for family observance to remember the deliverance God brought about for his people enslaved in Egypt. The blood of the lamb sprinkled on door lintels saved the readied and believing people from death visited upon every Egyptian family. The angel of death ‘passed over’ these homes. The punishment of God upon the Egyptians enabled the Hebrews at last to leave. The strict observance of detail in preparation and partaking signified God’s complete commitment and the people’s reception of life and liberty solely from his hands in sincere repentance. The Passover continued annually to remind Jewish families of their need for deliverance from sin through the substitutionary blood of the lamb.

1 CORINTHIANS 11:23-26: Our Lord desired to partake of the Passover with his disciples on the night before he died. After they had completed the Passover celebration, he gave them the bread and wine saying that they should take, eat and drink, for this was HIS body and blood, given and shed for them for the forgiveness of sins. The body and blood of Jesus were given into death only the next day. Christians, like the disciples, have the same promise from the Lord as they eat the bread and drink the wine. They receive that same body and blood together with the blessings he won through the cross in a regular and continued sacramental remembrance attended by the Holy Spirit.

JOHN 13:1-17,31b-35: John does not deal with the Lord’s supper in this gospel, concentrating rather on the farewell teaching of the Lord in the upper room. It could be said that the radical action of the Master doing menial service in washing his followers’ feet expressed symbolically what was coming in his death the next day. He had taught that he came to serve and give his life as a ransom for many. The lesson, however, is pointed. They  are to serve each other in like spirit. The love shown in his act and his death calls for the active love enjoined in ‘the new commandment’.

Maundy Thursday.

The service on Maundy Thursday is the first part of the Three Days to Easter (Triduum) celebration.

Although communion services in the evening are now commonplace, for many hundreds of years this service was the only time in the church year when the eucharist was celebrated after noon. The timing in the early evening was intended to draw worshippers’ attention to the fact that this night is ‘the night on which he was betrayed’.

Stripping of the altar

The ceremony of stripping of the altar involves the progressive removal of the appointments and cloths covering the altar.

Originally the stripping was done on Maundy Thursday in order that the cloths and the altar might receive their once-a-year wash in preparation for Easter, but these days symbolism, rather than pragmatism, calls for the ceremony to be observed. The stripping of the altar table is seen as a symbol of the way in which Christ was stripped of his clothing and his dignity before his crucifixion. The rite points ahead to the second day of the Three Days to Easter celebration, Good Friday.

GOOD FRIDAY  NOTES ON THE READINGS

ISAIAH 52:13 – 52:12: These words of prophecy comprising the fourth Servant Song were spoken initially to the Jewish people in Babylon, whom Isaiah was urging to return to rebuild Jerusalem. However, they have always been applied by the church to God’s suffering servant, the Messiah, our Lord Jesus, so detailed are they in applying to his work of redemption and his exaltation. The servant’s initial humiliation, portrayed in language of sickness, drew a reaction only of revulsion and rejection. However, his following obvious exaltation forced even the most powerful agencies to review their thinking about him with amazement. The explanation lay in his deliberate willingness to accept others’ guilt and to suffer for it. He therefore could bring blessing to others. Yet it was the Lord’s hand which laid this upon him so that he might be an offering for sin. Being exalted beyond the grave, he could intercede on behalf of others and provide a righteousness which would belong to many. Whatever purpose these words had for Jews initially, Christians treasure them for their fulfilment in the death and exaltation of our Lord.

HEBREWS 10:16-25: In the preceding verses the writer refers to the completion of Jesus’ sacrifice passing into his exalted enthronement in heaven. This selection for today relates this to the fulfilment of God’s promise through the prophecy of Jeremiah (31:31-34) that in a new covenant God would make his people to be a new creation. Therefore, having been made pure by the work of the great High Priest, we should enter God’s presence with confidence. The new life brings a mutual encouragement among his people to increase in worship participation and good deeds.

JOHN 18:1 – 19:42: The gospel accounts of the passion and crucifixion of our Lord do not treat the doctrinal implications of the death of our Lord, but mainly give a historical description of the events themselves. However, in John’s account there are clear illustrations of truths Jesus taught woven into the events of the narrative. We see him as the paschal Lamb offered as sacrifice for the sins of the world, the good Shepherd laying down his life for the sheep, the obedient Son fulfilling the will of the Father, the Judge of the world who will one day come in majesty, and the messianic King crowned with thorns but achieving glory as God sees and wills it.

Good Friday.

The service on Good Friday is the second part of the Three Days to Easter (Triduum) celebration.

This service is one of the most ancient in the heritage of the Western Christian church. Good Friday was the original fast day of the early church. It existed before the period of Lent was established, and even before the development of the rest of Holy Week. This fast is almost as old as the celebration of the resurrection itself. The service is sparse and simple – not because later liturgical embellishments have been removed from the service, but rather because they were never added. Hence it begins almost immediately with the greeting and prayer of the day (collect) without additional entrance songs such as the ‘Lord, have mercy’ or ‘Glory to God in the highest’. Neither the ‘Glory to the Father . . .’ nor the Nicene Creed (both later additions) are used.

ENCOURAGERS CORNER    Matt 4:23b   Jesus ..also healed every kind of disease and sickness.
Christian friends. PRAY for our Pastor that he may receive healing. He is not at all well, and needs extended Leave to recover from Ross River fever. It is now our duty as members of Trinity ChristChurch Parish to pray for his recovery.
Each member of the Parish is – do everything you can to keep it working smoothly. Do everything possible to avoid conflict between each other. Faithfully encourage each other to attend the Worship of our Lord, keep our congregations’ members together, and pray for our Pastor.
God is testing us to see how faithful we are. Please keep looking for ways in which we can be of service in this. Let’s not fail the Test.
To God be the Glory!
