WELCOME!

M: Rejoice, all heavenly choirs of angels, and sing for joy; sound the trumpet of victory for our marvellous king.

Rejoice, all the earth, shining with the radiance of Christ our eternal king; celebrate the dawn that banishes the darkness.

Rejoice, mother church, clothed with the brightness of Christ, and let this house resound with the voices of many people.

* IF THIS IS YOUR FIRST TIME WITH US, a very special welcome to you. If we can do anything for you, please let us know. We would love to have you worship with us again.

PRAYEROF THE DAY

Lord God our Father, maker of heaven and earth: Grant that, as the crucified body of your dear Son was laid in the tomb to await the glory that would be revealed, so we may endure the darkness of this present time in the sure confidence that we shall rise with him; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C: Amen.

EASTER VIGIL

The Easter Vigil is a part of the ‘Three Days to Easter’ celebration, completing the action that was begun on Maundy Thursday.

THE SHAPE OF THE SERVICE

The service consists of four main parts:

*     Liturgy of light

*     Liturgy of the word

*     Confession of baptismal faith

*     Liturgy of the sacrament

This service is the most ancient service in the heritage of the Christian church in both the East and the West.

The vigil was the original baptismal festival of the Christian church, drawing together the mystery of the resurrection with the mystery of new life in baptism, and doing so against a background of the whole history of God’s salvation (9 Readings from the Old Testament). The all-night service of readings and prayers was to prepare the catechumens for baptism. The baptisms were then celebrated early on Easter Sunday morning, at the hour of Christ’s resurrection, and followed immediately with the celebration of the paschal feast, the first eucharist of Easter.

The baptismal reading from Romans 6:3-11 forms a bridge between the ‘Liturgy of the word’ and the ‘Liturgy of the sacrament’, and introduces the baptismal section of the liturgy. When the whole service is viewed as a eucharistic celebration, then this reading also has the function normally taken by the second reading in the service with holy communion, following as it does the readings from the Old Testament. This explains why later only the gospel is read in the ‘Liturgy of the sacrament’.

BAPTISM

Today, at Trinity, we come to celebrate the good news of baptism.

Our Lord Jesus Christ says: Go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.

We welcome Marlie Paige Hilt, daughter of Kylie and Jamie Hilt, into the family of God.

As Marlie is being  baptised, we remember that in baptism God gives us, and her, forgiveness of sins, freedom from death and the devil, and life with God forever.

God saved us because of his mercy… God washed us by the power of the Holy Spirit. He gave us new birth and a fresh beginning. God sent Jesus Christ our Saviour to give us his Spirit. Jesus treated us much better than we deserve. He made us acceptable to God and gave us the hope of eternal life.

Welcome Marlie, to your new life in Christ, from your new family at Trinity Lutheran Church.

What has Passover got to do with Easter?

Easter and Passover always fall close to each other but they are not always at exactly the same time.

For many centuries before Jesus’ birth, the Jewish people had their own special spring festival, called Passover (Pesach). Passover commemorates the time when God rescued the people of Israel from slavery and Moses led them out of Egypt. It is the Israelite’s liberation from Egypt that led to the beginning of Judaism.

Jesus, a Jew, was crucified during Passover time, and the Last Supper was a Passover seder (a ritual meal that commemorates the Biblical accounting of the Jews escape from Egyptian slavery). It is Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection that led to the start of Christianity.

Both Easter and Passover revolve around the idea of rebirth.

Jewish slaves were reborn into freedom from Egypt.

Jesus is resurrected, or born again for our freedom from sin.

Both festivals draw in the idea of birth or rebirth with the hard-boiled eggs served on Passover, and our Easter eggs

ENCOURAGERS CORNER    Mark 16:9-11
9Very early on the first day of the week, after Jesus had risen to life, he appeared to Mary Magdalene. Earlier he had forced seven demons out of her. 10She left and told his friends, who were crying and mourning. 11Even though they heard that Jesus was alive and that Mary had seen him, they would not believe it.
How sad! Jesus had told his disciples that he would arise from the grave but they could not understand it. But hooray! Thank God that we have the scriptures to tell us that he really did come alive again. Not only that, but he went to his Father in heaven, and one day he will return.
If we believe this, we will have eternal life.
